How to Level Decking Ground for a Solid Base

A deck only performs as well as the ground beneath it. If the base moves, holds water or slopes in the wrong direction, even high-quality composite boards and joists can end up uneven. Knowing how to level decking ground before the frame is installed helps prevent standing water, loose fixings and a finish that feels less than professional.

For most garden projects, the aim is not to make every inch of soil perfectly flat. It is to create a stable, well-drained foundation with accurately levelled support points for the decking frame. That distinction saves time, materials and future repair work.

Start by assessing the area

Measure the proposed deck area and check the ground at several points, not just around the edges. A long straightedge with a spirit level works for small spaces; a laser level is faster and more accurate on larger gardens. Take note of the highest point, the lowest point and the direction water currently travels after rain.

Check for underground services before digging. Take particular care near houses, garden lighting, drainage runs, gas supplies and existing cables. If the deck will sit close to the property, keep the finished structure below the damp-proof course and avoid blocking air bricks. Water must always be able to drain away from the building.

Also consider access. A ground-level deck may need only modest excavation, while a significantly sloping garden can require raised framing, concrete pads or ground screws. Cutting deeply into a slope is not always the best answer. In many cases, building the frame up from the lower ground is quicker and creates less disturbance.

Decide on the right base before levelling

The correct preparation depends on the site, the height of the finished deck and the support system being used. Composite decking should sit on a strong, properly supported subframe rather than directly on soil, turf or loose gravel.

For a low deck over firm, reasonably level ground, a compacted aggregate base with paving slabs or concrete support pads is often a practical option. The slabs give each joist support point a solid, adjustable surface and reduce the chance of settlement.

For uneven, soft or sloping ground, concrete pads, raised posts set in concrete, adjustable pedestals or ground screws may be more suitable. These approaches cost more initially, but they can reduce excavation and make it easier to achieve a level frame. On a steep site, it is usually better to level the structure than to try to level the entire garden.

Do not rely on timber blocks placed straight onto bare earth. They can sink, rot or shift with frost and wet weather. A durable composite deck deserves a base that will remain stable through British winters.

Clear the ground and remove organic material

Mark out the deck perimeter using string lines, spray marker or pegs. Add enough room around the edges to work comfortably and install any fascia or edging detail later.

Remove turf, plants, roots and loose topsoil across the area. Organic material breaks down over time, leaving voids that allow the surface above to settle. Excavating to a consistent depth also makes it easier to build a compacted base rather than trying to level over uneven soil.

If the ground is particularly soft, dig until you reach firmer subsoil. In clay-heavy gardens, allow for slower drainage and avoid working the ground immediately after prolonged rain, when it will smear rather than compact properly. If you encounter extensive roots from a mature tree, seek advice before cutting them, as they may affect the tree's health and stability.

Once cleared, lay a weed-control membrane over the soil. This is not a substitute for proper excavation or compaction, but it helps reduce weed growth below the deck. Overlap joints and secure the membrane so it stays in place while the sub-base is added.

How to level decking ground with a sub-base

For a deck close to ground level, spread MOT Type 1 or a similar well-graded aggregate over the membrane. Build it up in layers of roughly 50mm to 75mm rather than tipping in the full depth at once. Compact each layer using a plate compactor, checking levels regularly as you go.

Set a datum line first. This is your fixed reference height, usually taken from the intended finished deck level. From there, work backwards to allow for the thickness of the decking boards, joists, bearers, supports and any required ventilation gap. Getting this calculation right before adding aggregate avoids a common problem: a deck that ends up too high against a door threshold or damp-proof course.

The compacted sub-base does not have to be level to the millimetre across the whole area. It should, however, be even, firm and shaped to avoid water pooling. A slight fall away from the house is sensible where the layout allows. The decking frame itself must be level at its support points, unless a deliberate drainage fall is specified by the system manufacturer.

Rake the aggregate roughly into place, compact it, then check with your level and straightedge. Low areas should be topped up and compacted again. Do not simply spread loose material over a dip and place a slab on top. It will settle under load.

Set slabs or pads accurately

Place paving slabs or concrete pads at the planned joist support locations. Their spacing must suit the joist dimensions and the load the deck will carry, particularly where steps, planters, hot tubs or heavy furniture are involved. Follow the joist and board manufacturer's recommended centres rather than guessing.

Bed each slab on a thin layer of sharp sand, fine aggregate or mortar as appropriate for the base design. Check every slab for level in both directions, then check neighbouring slabs together with a straightedge. It is much easier to make small adjustments now than after the frame is assembled.

For concrete pads, dig to firm ground, add and compact a granular layer where needed, then pour the concrete into a simple shuttered form. Set post bases or brackets accurately while the concrete is workable if your design calls for them. Let concrete cure sufficiently before loading it with the frame.

Build in drainage and ventilation

Decking is designed for outdoor conditions, but trapped moisture shortens the life of timber framing and encourages moss, dirt build-up and odours beneath any deck. Ground preparation should leave a clear path for rainwater to escape.

Avoid creating a sealed bowl of compacted material beneath the deck. Where drainage is poor, consider a permeable aggregate finish, a shallow drainage route or a raised support system that improves airflow. The best solution depends on the garden's soil type, existing drainage and how close the deck is to the house.

Keep clearance below the joists wherever possible. A very low deck may need a slimmer support design, but it should still have enough airflow to dry out after rain. Leave suitable expansion gaps between composite boards and around fixed features, following the product guidance. Good ground preparation and correct board spacing work together to manage water effectively.

Check the frame, not just the soil

Once supports are installed, assemble the subframe and check it repeatedly with a long level or laser. Check along each joist, across the joists and diagonally across the whole structure. A frame can look level at the corners while dipping in the middle if one support is missed.

Use suitable packers or adjustable supports only where they are designed for permanent external use. Avoid improvised shims that can compress or deteriorate. Secure the joists to their supports so the frame cannot creep sideways over time.

Before fitting boards, walk carefully across the frame and look for movement, bounce or rocking. Correcting one low pad or adding a support at this stage is straightforward. Once composite boards, trims and edging boards are fitted, access becomes far more limited.

Common levelling mistakes to avoid

The most expensive mistakes usually come from rushing the unseen work. Avoid laying a frame directly on soil, placing supports on loose fill or using un-compacted aggregate. Each can lead to uneven boards and recurring adjustment work.

Do not level ground towards the house, cover air bricks or set the finished deck too high against external walls. Equally, do not assume a naturally sloping garden needs extensive excavation. Raised supports can be the cleaner, more cost-effective solution when ground levels vary significantly.

Finally, make sure the whole system is planned together. The board profile, joist direction, clip spacing, fascia detail and finished height all affect the base layout. Ordering compatible boards, joists, trims and stainless steel fixings at the outset helps keep installation moving and delivers a cleaner finish.

A carefully prepared base will not be the part visitors notice first, but it is the reason a new deck stays firm, drains well and continues to look right year after year.
