For UK gardens, there is rarely one drainage product that suits every project. The right approach depends on whether the deck is raised or ground-level, how much rainwater the site receives, the soil type and whether the area beneath the deck needs to stay dry. Getting these details right before boards are fitted is far easier and more cost-effective than trying to correct trapped water later.

Start with the fall of the deck and the ground

Good drainage begins with the structure, not an add-on. A deck should be built with a slight fall away from the property so rainwater is encouraged to move into the garden rather than towards doors, walls or air bricks. The fall only needs to be subtle, but it must be planned into the joist layout and checked during installation.

The ground below also needs a route for water. Soil that is already compacted or clay-heavy may hold water for days after rainfall. In that case, simply leaving open gaps between decking boards will not solve the issue. Water will pass through the surface, but it will still collect underneath.

A well-prepared base usually includes a weed membrane and a layer of clean gravel. The membrane helps prevent soil and vegetation from mixing into the gravel, while the gravel creates a more stable, free-draining area below the frame. It also makes it easier to spot blocked drainage, pests or a loose fixing when carrying out future checks.

Where the deck meets a paved patio, driveway or lawn, consider how the levels work together. Water should not be channelled into a low point beside the deck. On larger installations, particularly where the deck borders the house, a channel drain can provide a controlled route to a suitable soakaway or existing surface-water drainage point.

Board spacing is one of the best deck drainage solutions

The gaps between boards are there for more than appearance. They allow rainwater, leaves and everyday debris to move through the deck rather than sit on the walking surface. They also allow composite decking boards room to expand and contract with changes in temperature.

Composite decking is well suited to British weather because it does not absorb water in the way timber does. However, it still needs correct spacing and airflow to perform as intended. Closing the gaps too tightly can cause water to linger, encourage a build-up of debris and affect the clean, consistent finish customers expect.

The required gap will vary by board profile and fixing system, so always follow the manufacturer’s installation guidance. Keep the board gaps clear once the deck is in use. A quick brush after autumn leaf fall and after storms can prevent a small blockage becoming a damp, slippery strip. This is especially worthwhile around steps, corners, planters and areas below trees, where debris naturally gathers.

When an under-deck drainage system makes sense

If a raised deck has usable space underneath, an under-deck drainage system can be a worthwhile addition. These systems sit below the decking boards and catch water as it falls through the gaps, directing it into gutters and downpipes. The area beneath can then be used for dry storage, a sheltered seating area or a tidy place for garden equipment.

This option is most effective on elevated decks with enough clearance to fit and maintain the system. It can be a strong choice for balconies, decks over sloping gardens and raised platforms outside patio doors. It is less useful for a low-level deck with little or no access below, where the priority should be preparing a free-draining base instead.

There are two main approaches. Purpose-made under-deck panels are fitted beneath the joists or between them, creating a shaped surface that sends water to a gutter. Alternatively, some installations use a membrane-based trough system fixed between joists before the boards are installed.

Both approaches have trade-offs. Panel systems can offer a neater visible underside and a more finished look, but may need careful detailing around posts, stairs and lighting cables. Trough systems can be practical during construction, though access for cleaning and inspection should be considered from the outset. Whichever system is chosen, it needs a clear fall to the outlet. Water cannot be expected to find its way to a downpipe without one.

Protect the frame as well as the deck boards

A drainage plan that only considers the top surface can leave the structural timber or composite joists exposed to repeated wetting. The joists, bearer supports and fixings are the parts doing the hard work, so they deserve the same attention as the visible boards.

Joist protection tape is a simple upgrade for timber subframes. Applied across the top of each joist before the boards are fitted, it reduces the amount of water sitting directly on the timber at the board gaps. This is particularly useful where hidden clips create regular points for water to pass through. It will not replace proper ground drainage or ventilation, but it can help extend the service life of a timber frame.

Use suitable fixings throughout the build. Cheap or mismatched fixings can stain boards, seize during maintenance and compromise the finish over time.

Ventilation matters too. Air needs to move beneath the deck so moisture can dry after rainfall. Avoid boxing in every side of a raised deck without allowing for vents or discreet gaps. If skirting is part of the design, ventilated panels or planned openings can keep the perimeter smart without trapping damp air below.

Deal with runoff at the edge of the deck

The deck perimeter is often where drainage problems become obvious. Water running off the boards can erode soil, splash against the structure or collect next to a fence or wall. A gravel border around the deck can soften the transition into the garden and provide a simple drainage zone for normal runoff.

For properties with poor drainage, a French drain may be more appropriate. This is a gravel-filled trench, usually containing a perforated pipe, that collects water and carries it to a suitable discharge point. It is useful where water repeatedly gathers along one side of the deck or where the ground slopes towards it.

Any connection to existing drainage should be planned carefully. Surface water and foul water systems must not be mixed, and local rules can affect what is permitted. For complex drainage, sites with persistent flooding or work close to the property’s foundations, a qualified drainage professional can assess levels and discharge options before construction begins.

Choosing the right setup for your project

For a straightforward ground-level composite deck, a slight fall, correctly spaced boards, a membrane and a compacted gravel base will often provide the best balance of cost, performance and low maintenance. Add a gravel edge where runoff is likely to collect.

For a raised deck over a patio, slope or storage area, combine those basics with an under-deck drainage system. This keeps the space below far more practical, provided the system can be accessed and cleaned. For wet gardens with clay soil or regular pooling, address the site drainage first with a channel drain, French drain or properly designed soakaway.
