Start with measuring and setting-out tools
Most installation issues can be traced back to poor setting out. Before ordering boards or cutting joists, confirm the finished deck size, the direction of the boards, step positions and where water will drain. A tape measure, builders' square and pencil are basic items, but they should be used constantly rather than only at the beginning.
A chalk line is particularly useful on larger decks. It gives you a clear guide for the outer edge of the frame and helps keep bearer and joist runs consistent. Use a string line to check that the front edge of the structure remains straight as work progresses. A deck can be structurally sound yet still look poor if the board ends wander along the perimeter.
You will also need a long spirit level. A 1.8 metre level is useful for checking joists and frame sections, while a shorter level is easier around steps and tight corners. Drilling, driving and the fixings that matter

Carry spare charged batteries if you are working through a full day, particularly during colder months when batteries can run down faster.
Choose driver bits that properly fit the screws supplied. Worn or poorly matched bits can round screw heads, slow the job down and damage the finish. Magnetic bit holders are convenient, although they should not encourage rushed fixing. Keep screws square to the material and stop once the fixing is secure. Overdriving can split timber joists or pull a trim fixing too deeply into a composite board.
For composite decking, concealed clip systems are normally the best choice. They preserve the board face, create even gaps and give a tidy professional result. Where face fixing is required for starter boards, edge details or particular board profiles, pre-drilling is often worthwhile. It reduces the risk of surface damage and helps maintain a consistent fixing line. Use stainless steel fixings designed for external use. Build the subframe with confidence
The visible boards get the attention, but the subframe carries the load. A strong composite deck needs a correctly spaced, well-supported framework built from suitable joists and bearers. A post-hole digger may be needed for freestanding decks using concrete footings. Check every joist for level and alignment before laying boards. Once the deck surface is down, correcting a high joist or weak connection becomes far more difficult. Pay extra attention to joins between boards. These should always land on adequate support, with the correct gap and fixing arrangement for the board system being used.
If the deck is raised, consider access beneath it before closing the final sections. You may need space to inspect drainage, reach service pipes or clear leaves from below. A removable board or planned access panel is a small detail that can prevent a frustrating maintenance job later.

Dry-fit trims before applying adhesive or driving the first fixing. Check corners from standing height as well as close up. A joint that looks acceptable on the ground can be obvious once viewed from the garden or through a set of patio doors. Allow the recommended expansion gaps and use the fixing method specified for the trim profile.
For raised decks, plan steps, handrails and lighting routes before the final boards go down. A drill extension bit or cable puller may be useful if wiring needs to pass through the frame, but electrical work should be designed and completed by a qualified person. Keep cable routes protected and accessible, rather than trapping them against sharp edges or beneath structural fixings.
